With Cox providing cable modems at a small monthly fee, many wonder if you should actually buy one. Well, there are benefits to buying one like avoiding an escalating monthly rental fee. And you actually own a modem to do whatever you want with it like using it if you change internet service providers. While you have to make-do with whichever modem is given to you on a rental basis, you also have the liberty of choosing the best modems for Cox that meets your individual viewing needs.

With tons of modems to choose from, these factors prove helpful at making the right choice:

1. Computer usage – Choose based on your computer usage because if you tend to stream lots of high-definition videos on your computer, then you require a very powerful modem. If you use the internet for doing things like chatting, checking emails and browsing the social media, then a slightly weaker modem is more than enough for you.
Make your selection based on how you use the internet and the amount of power and speed you require. There’s no point paying extra for a really strong modem if you don’t use the internet much!

2. The number of connected devices – Select the best modem for Cox based on the number of devices that will be connected to it on a given day. 3. Check the DOCSIS – Always look for a modem that has DOCSIS, the acronym for Data over Cable Services Interface Specifications on the box. It comes as 1.0 and 2.0 where a higher number modem performs better.
You have to choose based on your internet plan speeds and performances as the modem delivers the speed your ISP provides. Buying a modem with a higher DOCSIS will not help increase your internet plan’s slow speed.

4. Cox compatibility – Don’t forget to ensure the modem you intend to buy is compatible with Cox Cable or else there’s no point in buying the modem at all. The best way to find out is by checking the product description and calling Cox to find out if the said modem is compatible with their services. It’s always better to contact the company directly as the description may have mistakes. If they say the modem isn’t Cox compatible, better go looking for another one!

5. Refurbished modems are cheaper – While brand- new modems are definitely better as they are new and they offer a long warranty, you can save money by buying a refurbished modem. These modems have been repaired, and are in 100% working condition.
They are available at a discount and come with a warranty that’s shorter than the brand new modem warranty. To be on the safer side, it’s always better to buy refurbished modems from a reputable dealer.
